I designed this recipe sampler to accompany the exhibit, Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries while working at the ImaginAsia family program at the Smithsonian’s Freer + Sackler Galleries (now the National Museum of Asian Art).

The recipes in this guide give the reader an introduction to some of the spices that lured the Portuguese to distant lands. Without spices from Asia and the Americas, none of these foods could be prepared. To bring texture and dimension to the design, I scanned actual spices to use as imagery.
